The five of them sat around the wrought-iron table with its fleur-de-lis vines and Calcutta marble top illuminated with white candles and the string lights overhead, enjoying bottles of wine and champagne and plates full of food, feeling warm and slightly buzzed from the alcohol, and the gurgling fountain added to the ambiance of the warm spring night.

Tammy had suggested if they were going to do this, then they couldn’t do it on an empty stomach, and so she had raided the wine fridge for as much Malbec, Rioja, Vouvray, and champagne as possible, not knowing what everyone would prefer but knowing it was always best to get drunk on the good stuff. The guys put together a large cutting board full of various cheeses, cold cuts, a re-heated baked brie from the night before, and to their surprise, Trish had cured the extra cut of salmon overnight in coarse sea salt.

Finally, Aaron had put together a salad and Amanda and Carolyn had set the table, with the exception of the wine glasses, which they were all already drinking from.

Sandra was at work and Christy and Trish had left for a friend’s dinner party, and Andy had already been gone by the time they got downstairs. It was better anyways. They couldn’t have this conversation in front of the others, and they would have been complete jerks if they had told them that they were not allowed to join the five of them for dinner. Once again, it was as if there was something else at play, ensuring that things worked out so that Bailey couldn’t be ignored.

They had spent the first forty minutes eating and talking about what they were all doing, what they were in school for or what had all brought them up to Bellingham, always skirting away from the real reason: that there was something bigger at play, something beyond them that was pulling all the strings and bringing them together for some greater purpose.

They smoked pot and drank and ate and drank some more, but it was as if they were drinking their way towards something, using the alcohol as the vehicle to get them to the heart of the issue—the thing that terrified them and that summoned old ghosts and opened old wounds—and that was Bailey Nguyen and their eighth grade year.

It was the late Nineties, and it was everything that went along with coming of age in a time when the culture was rebelling and death was common. Heroes died and everything was turning on its head.

There were eras, decades in time when great changes took place that echoed for years to come, and the Nineties had been one of those decades, when the internet changed everything and Gen-Xers were demonstrating free expression.

There was a culture of depression and rage that led to the celebration of sex and carving your own path. There were suicides, and eating disorders began to get talked about in a very public way, and then there was the
